Widely renowned as one of the most successful downtempo acts, Thievery Corporation came together when Rob Garza and Eric Hilton met at Washington, in 1995. Sharing a common admiration of Antonio Carlos Jobim, 60s bossanova and jazz, the duet began working by setting two ground rules: never limit themselves to one music genre and never allow anyone outside the group interfere with their music -that’s why from the beginning till this day, they produced, released and distributed their records through their independent music label.
In 1996, they released their groundbreaking debut LP, “Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi”, a classic record of the downtempo/trip hop era, which introduces Garza and Hilton as pioneers of the song-based electronic music. An impressive string of releases will follow, like “The Mirror Conspiracy”, the transcendent “Richest Man in Babylon”, “The Cosmic Games” (collaborating with Flaming Lips and David Byrne among others) and the most recent “The Temple of I & I” and “Treasures from the Temple”, constituting an impressive catalog of a group that have created a truly personal and diverse sound that starts from dub reggae to hip hop and eastern music.
But the reason they remained at the top of the scene all these years, is their live performances. A truly great live act, with a killer band and an array of vocalists from diverse global cultures, Thievery Corporation always offer something different. Of course, the thousands of music fans that attended their two previous visits at Release Athens already know that.
