The amazing Morrissey is coming to Release Athens 2025
Release Athens 2025 welcomes Morrissey on Wednesday July 16th, at Plateia Nerou. The English artist, one of the most influential musicians of all time and perhaps the top lyricist of his generation, returns to Athens after many years to remind us that, apart from everything else, he is also an impeccable performer.
More acts to be announced soon!
As the lead singer of The Smiths, the most important indie band in Britain during the 80s, Morrissey’s unique, theatrical voice and sharp lyrics -full of romance, cynicism, humor, nihilism and everything that defines the human condition, regardless of the era – managed in a magical five-year run and four legendary albums to leave a legacy that will, no doubt, prove to be eternal.
Just six months after the Smiths disbanded, in March 1988, Morrissey released “Viva Hate”, launching his solo career, with an album that immediately topped the UK charts. What followed was just as exciting, as he released a series of great albums throughout the 1990s, including “Your Arsenal” (1992) and “Vauxhall And I” (1994), two albums that are rarely absent from 90s highlights lists.
After a seven-year hiatus, he launched a comeback with “You Are The Quarry” (2004), an album whose success proved that he was still one of the most intriguing figures in the alternative scene. The sensational “Ringleader of the Tormentors” (2006) simply confirmed that his presence was still vital on the world music scene, while “Years of Refusal” (2009), “World Peace Is None of Your Business” (2014) and “Low in High School” (2017) found him exploring new sonic avenues.
In recent years, he has released the covers album “California Son” (2019), a tribute to some of his musical influences, and “I Am Not A Dog On A Chain” (2020), demonstrating that he is still looking for artistic evolution.
On Wednesday the 16th of July we will be lucky enough to host one of the most acclaimed voices of the last 40 years at Release Athens, a precious artist who changed the musical landscape forever with the release of The Smiths’ debut single “Hand In Glove” and launched a rich catalogue of songs that includes anthems like “This Charming Man”, “How Soon Is Now? “, “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”, “Suedehead”, “Everyday Is Like Sunday”, “Irish Blood, English Heart”, “First of the Gang to Die” and several other unforgettable songs, many of which will be performed live on a historic night at Plateia Nerou.
