When you hear the name Beth Gibbons, you automatically think of Portishead. With them she delivered three monumental albums, not only for trip-hop, but for music history in general. “Dummy” (1994), “Portishead” (1997), “Third” (2008) have been landmarks in contemporary music for 30 years, with Gibbons’ rare voice being a key feature.
In 2002, he released “Out Of Season” with Rustin Man, while in 2019 he performed Henryk Gorecki’s famous 3rd Symphony in Polish, in collaboration with avant-garde composer Krysztof Penderecki. In 2022, he sang on Kendrick Lamar’s “Mother I Sober”, on his album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”. Rare and distinctive collaborations, but they confirm the eclecticism and breadth of her unique talent.
In 2024, Beth released her first solo album. The melancholic masterpiece “Lives Outgrown” made every best-of list of the year and her live performances were celebrated!
This was a project that had been 10 years in the making. The lyrics deal with motherhood, fear, mortality and the passing of time. Captivating, intimate and personal as ever, Beth Gibbons says her own goodbye to loved ones lost over the years, in a cross between lament and life, melancholy and optimism, with a performance that uplifts every sense.
With songs like “Floating on a Moment”, “Reaching Out” and “Lost Changes”, he presents a study in loss that manages to tame grief through a rich (and surprising) instrumentation that draws inspiration from English folk, jazz and progressive rock.
When she sings, her voice doesn’t allow you to think of anything else. The same goes for her stage presence. Stoic, quiet, but with the charisma to evoke every emotion from the moment she steps on stage.
Sunday July 20th will definitely be a day to remember!
